DRAdrianMD on Stress
[MUSIC PLAYING] Hi. This is Doctor Adrian M.D. Are you under stress? Most Americans are nowadays. You may even hear my children running upstairs and causing some possible stress. Patients often see me asking what can they do to handle stress. Commonly medical doctors prescribe antidepressants, anxiety medications, but this does nothing to make the person stronger and more able to handle stress. When I see a patient has anxiety and feeling stressed out, I just don't try to sedate them or calm them. I try to improve their ability to function and to handle stress. I want to strengthen their health. At the same time, there are nutrients and herbs that can make a person more calm. The hormone DHEA, which declines as we get older, can help you handle stress, can give you clearer cognition. You can think more clearly, you can get more done in a day. It's sort of the anti-stress hormone, whereas cortisol, which is the opposite, goes up with the stress. We know that stress can also increase weight gain, and this is due to the cortisol. Another common deficiency that causes stress, the feeling of being stressed, is magnesium deficiency. Magnesium is found in dark green leafy vegetables, and few people eat enough of these to feel calm. Being deficient can give you a sense of impending doom. I sell more magnesium at my office than I sell any other nutrient. Now diet plays a role. I've seen patients who, when they eat wheat, they feel emotional, they feel stressed, they may even be tearful. You may be having a reaction to what you're eating, and that may be creating for you a sense of stress. You may be eating chocolate or drinking caffeinated drinks that are making you feel stressed out. It's actually not external. It's an internal problem that's making you feel stressed. On my website I list numerous products that may improve mood, may improve anxiety. If you go under the health concerns emotional health section, there'll be both anxiety and stress. I'd encourage you to look at the products that we have lined up there. But again, lifestyle, diet, proper sleep, exercise, and also stretching can help you handle stress. I practice yoga. Yoga is a form of exercise and also relaxation. By stretching and taking deep breaths, you relieve stress. When you're under stress, you don't breathe properly. When people do yoga, one of the key things we teach is controlling the breath, taking deep breaths. Relaxation techniques are also taught with doing yoga. I'd encourage you to either take yoga classes or get some videos or books on yoga as well. I think I've covered the main things regarding stress, again you can always see me for an appointment, maybe medications you're on, maybe an underlying medical illness as well. I'd encourage you to see me if you can. Otherwise, please stay tuned for any upcoming treatment plans on these topics. This is Doctor Adrian, M.D.
